Ensuring active participation of civil society in Voluntary National Reviews and in monitoring progress on the implementation of the SDGs

We invite all interested to the HLPF online civil society session, where we will discuss three issues in order to share information, experience, and recommendations to unite civil society in our region. Three issues for discussion are:  1) CSOs and VNRs in 2020, 2) What changes happened after VNR — in 20018, 2019, and 3) COVID-19 —  role of CSOs in response processes and exit planning out of crisis.

Role of civil society in the SDG processes is crucial. This session is devoted to a review of the participation of CSOs in the preparation of Voluntary National Reports (VNRs) of several countries from the East European, Caucasian and Central Asian regions, who are presenting their first Voluntary National Reports at the HLPF in 2020.

Speakers from these countries will talk about how civil society was involved in the process of preparing the VNRs and present their own reports. During the session,  implementation of SDG commitments after VNRs submissions in the countries will be discussed. What impact did VNR have on the SDGs after reporting?

In addition, we will briefly discuss the participation of civil society in the COVID-19 response and the possible joint actions. Participation of CSOs in responding to the crisis helps to develop plans for overcoming the crisis, enhance the effectiveness of processes, and increase level of transparency.

The result of the session will be the discussion of common recommendations from civil society to States and other development partners on further joint work on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. We shall share information about the preparation of the Civil Society Action Week, which will be held in September 2020.
